What began as a modest in-house contractor for the Ruparelia Group has grown into a key pillar in Uganda’s infrastructure boom. VCON Construction (U) Limited, once tasked with basic support for real estate projects under business magnate Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, has evolved into a nationally recognized construction powerhouse.
Today, VCON is not just building properties, it’s helping shape Uganda’s educational and infrastructural future.
Early Days: Building a Reputation from the Ground Up
Founded to support the Ruparelia Group’s hospitality, education, and commercial ventures, VCON’s early assignments involved building and maintaining some of Kampala’s landmark properties. These formative years helped VCON establish a reputation for quality, consistency, and timeliness, values synonymous with the Ruparelia Group.
“We started small, with a focus on delivering for the group. Every project was a chance to refine our craft,” a VCON representative said.
Becoming a Strategic Player in the Ruparelia Empire
As the Ruparelia Group expanded, so did VCON’s portfolio. No longer a support unit, VCON became a strategic arm of the Group, closely aligned with Dr. Sudhir’s vision for transforming Uganda through long-term infrastructure investments, particularly in the education sector.
That trust has translated into larger projects and increased responsibility. “VCON isn’t just a contractor; it’s a pillar of what we stand for,” said a Ruparelia Group official. “It’s about building a legacy, not just buildings.”
West Nile Milestone: Engineering Hope
The company’s latest feat, delivering the $13.5 million Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Faculty of Engineering and Technology in Arua, underscores this transformation. Handed over on June 13, 2025, the state-of-the-art faculty features laboratories, lecture halls, and a 500-bed student hostel, completed within just two years.

Funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), the project was inaugurated by Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia alongside Uganda’s Ambassador to Turkey, Nusurah Tiperu, and IUIU officials.
More than just concrete and steel, the faculty represents a turning point for West Nile’s youth. With programs in civil, electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering, it promises to produce the region’s next generation of innovators.
From Mbale to Arua: VCON’s Expanding Footprint
This isn’t VCON’s first educational landmark. In 2023, the company was awarded a $9.1 million contract to build academic infrastructure at IUIU’s main campus in Mbale. Its success in both Mbale and Arua has positioned VCON as a go-to partner for large-scale, high-impact public works.
These achievements reflect not only VCON’s growing technical capacity but also its rising profile in Uganda’s construction landscape, where private firms compete against military-linked contractors for government and donor-funded projects.

Strategic Support in a Tough Industry
Despite an uneven playing field and increasing costs, VCON’s integration into the Ruparelia ecosystem gives it an edge. Backed by one of Uganda’s most successful conglomerates, it enjoys access to strategic capital and networks that fuel its continued success.
In Arua, the construction of the IUIU facility created hundreds of jobs and boosted the local economy. “This project brought life to our town,” said Joseph Okello, a local vendor. “VCON didn’t just build a school, they built hope.”
A Legacy Taking Shape
From its modest beginnings to overseeing multimillion-dollar education projects, VCON Construction has stayed true to its founding principles while embracing Uganda’s larger development goals.
The company’s story is a testament to what’s possible with vision, discipline, and purpose, and it stands as proof that even the humblest contractor, when aligned with a bold legacy like the Ruparelia Group’s, can dream and build big.
